Three Ways to Prepare Your Patio for Spring

Spring is finally here, and while the weather is not quite sure what it is doing yet, the rest of us know it is time to get ready for the season of outdoor beauty. We want to shake off those winter blues and enjoy the upcoming spring and summer months by sitting in the sun and relaxing to the sounds of birds chirping in the trees. And your patio is the best place to do that. However, before you can, you have to make sure your patio is ready for the season (or invest in patio installation if you don’t have one yet). Here are several great steps to prepare your patio for lots of use this spring into the summer, and through the fall.

Inspect, Clean, And Repair

The first thing that you have to do is clear off and thoroughly inspect your patio. Winter can be hard on your home’s patio, and the damage caused by ice and the freeze-thaw cycle is nothing to take lightly. If you have damage to the patio structure, it’s important to find a trustworthy contractor to come out and repair it. While doing this, you can also extend the inspection to any residential walkways or driveways that might have been damaged. If there isn’t any damage to repair, you should still thoroughly clean off any algae or mildew and then apply a sealant for protection.

Decorate

Next, it’s time to decorate and make your patio even more beautiful. You can decorate with furniture, plants (potted on the patio or planted around it), and even lighting. Make the space livable and enjoyable. You want people to want to spend time out there, so making your patio accessible and adding comfortable furniture pieces is ideal. You might even consider replacing the door with something more beautiful or functional. Accessorize with some pillows, blankets, or outdoor rugs.

Reenergize

Finally, consider reenergizing the space by changing the way you use it. If you have always only had a picnic table, consider changing it out for some comfy loungers and a coffee table to get more or different uses out of it. You could also add cooking equipment, allowing you to create an extension of the kitchen instead of just a place to sit. If you really want to extend the use of the space, add adequate lighting so that people can use it even after the sunset, and consider adding heating elements (like a fire pit or a deck heater) so that chilly nights don’t automatically drive you inside.
